GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Garfield County commissioners have delayed voting on an extension of a moratorium on growing medical marijuana in the county.

Commissioners were scheduled on Monday to ratify an extension until May 2012. Instead, they tabled the issue until at least next week so they could see changes in how state lawmakers regulate the industry first. The legislative session ends Wednesday.

Last month the U.S. attorney in Denver sent state leaders a letter saying states shouldn’t pass bills that appear to authorize the medical marijuana business because the drug is still illegal under federal law.

The Post Independent reports County Commissioners Tom Jankovsky and Mike Samson said they fear they could be prosecuted if they vote on laws regulating the industry.
