It’s open season at Bonny Reservoir. In anticipation of the drainage of the Yuma County impoundment this fall, bag and possession limits for all species of fish have been lifted. Trotlines and jugs are also allowed for taking game fish now, provided anglers age 16 and older have a valid Colorado fishing license.
This fall, the State Engineer will begin draining the reservoir to satisfy a legal obligation to release the water to Kansas and Nebraska in compliance with the Republican River Compact. Division of Wildlife staff is expected to attempt a fish salvage sometime in September, transplanting remaining fish to other reservoirs before draining. Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to catch and keep as many fish as desired.
The water level at Bonny Reservoir is below normal, but the boat ramp is operational. As the reservoir is drained, it will become increasingly difficult for anglers to launch their boats. Contact Colorado State Parks on the Web at for current boat launching conditions and camping information.
