Frank’s field.
Keeping a secret can be difficult, but Columbine pulled if off Monday when the Jefferson County school dedicated its baseball field to longtime principal Frank DeAngelis.
Half an hour before the Rebels hosted Douglas County in a Class 5A nonleague game, they unveiled their new scoreboard in honor of DeAngelis, the program’s former coach who led the Rebels to the 1991 Class 5A (in a 6A system) championship in Pueblo with a walkoff hit.
“He was surprised,” Columbine athletic director Ed Woytek said.
The team featured DeAngelis, a tireless, regular viewer of Rebels sports across the board, in front of a color guard, family members and well-wishers.
Columbine won the game 3-2 on a walkoff walk in the bottom of the eighth inning.
