A 20-year-old woman accused of hurling a Molotov cocktail at Denver police has been charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder.

Amelia Nicol also faces additional felony charges of use of explosives, possession of explosives, second-degree arson, criminal mischief and inciting a riot, the Denver district attorney’s office announced Thursday. The charges carry a possible maximum penalty of 90 yeats in prison.

The DA’s office said that about 9:15 p.m. on May 6, Nicol threw an incendiary or explosive device at Denver police officers in a marked patrol car. The device exploded and burned.

Nicol fled but was taken into custody a short time later, spitting on officers as she resisted arrest, according to prosecutors.

The incident happened during an anti-police-brutality march in the area of West 11th Avenue and Kalamath Street, said Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the DA’s office. Kimbrough said it was not known whether Nicol was part of the group that headed the march.

Nicol is being held at the Denver County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, when she’ll be formally advised of the charges. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
