Someone used a mix of profanity, vandalism and phonetics to express an opinion at Grace United Methodist Church in Denver early Friday morning. The letters on the church’s four illuminated signs were rearranged into two new messages that included profanity and the word “meth,” pastor Jeff Babb said.

One of the signs originally displayed a quote from Abraham Lincoln. The new message left by the Scrabble vandal read, “If you are a scared (expletive) then go to church.”

Babb took down the letters of the two rearranged signs after he received several phone calls and e-mails Friday morning.

“It was very creative, turning the letters into words,” Babb said. “I was just glad that they didn’t use spray paint.”

Babb said there have been several incidents where people have used paint to vandalize the church, at East Yale Avenue and South Eudora Street, but nothing like this.

“It must have taken a lot of time to do this,” Babb said. “I just tried to get it down quickly.”
