An emergency has arisen at the Aspen Animal Shelter, where 23 cats and kittens were dumped near the front door sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, before employees arrived for work.

Shelter director Seth Sachson said it is not known who left the felines in front of the shelter. They were found inside six wooden crates that were not airtight, but did not have extra holes to allow more oxygen, he said.

“The guys got here for work at about 5:45 in the morning and they were in hand-built crates in the parking lot,” he said. “There were 23 cats inside ranging from young, 6-week-old kittens, to adults.”

Sachson said he wants anyone with information about who left the cats behind to come forward. But more importantly, he needs responsible community members to adopt cats that were already housed at the shelter to make room for the newbies.
