Denver Post editorial page editor Dan Haley is leaving the newspaper for a job in the banking sector.
The Post has launched a search for his replacement.
William Dean Singleton, publisher and chairman of the newspaper, said candidates from within The Post and outside will be considered for the job.
He said the position will be filled by a political centrist to reflect The Post’s moderate editorial positions, and to conform with Singleton’s personal political views which he described as “moderate, mainstream and non-partisan.”
“It’s a key position for the newspaper,” Singleton said. “It’s important that the person has similar viewpoints to mine.”
Singleton said that Vincent Carroll, a columnist for The Post’s editorial pages, has chosen not to be a candidate for the editor’s job, preferring instead to continue as a column writer.
Carroll will serve as interim editorial page editor until a replacement is found. Haley’s last day will be May 27.
Haley, 41, has served as editor of the editorial page since 2007. Previously he worked at The Post as an editorial writer and as a newsroom editor coordinating political and suburban coverage.
Haley’s new job is director of corporate communications for CoBank, a cooperative bank that provides loans and financing to industries in rural America.
“I tendered my resignation with mixed emotions,” Haley said in a statement. “Working at The Post has been one of the greatest highlights of my life, and I will always treasure, and be grateful for, all of the wonderful journalists I’ve had the pleasure to work for and with. However, I am excited to take a new step in my life and try something different.”
