DENVER—An immigrant suspected of being in the country illegally could receive $90,000 to settle a lawsuit alleging he was illegally held in a suburban Denver jail for 47 days.
The American Civil Liberties Union said Tuesday that Luis Quezada reached a $40,000 settlement with the Jefferson County sheriff, which held him at the request of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2009. Quezada reached a $50,000 settlement with ICE earlier this month. ICE admitted no wrongdoing by settling the case.
Quezada was arrested for failing to appear in court on traffic charges. Quezada alleges he was jailed for 47 days, even though a 48-hour request from ICE had expired.
Sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer says his office couldn’t comment because the settlement still needs to be approved by the county commissioners.
