A coconut porter seems like it might be a bit gimmicky, something like a Mounds bar in a can. This image is not dispelled by the squirrelly upper- and lowercase lettering on the label or its tagline, “like hot chicks on the beach.” However, Maui Brewing has a fine porter on its hands, and the hand- toasted coconut mentioned on the label is frankly not discernible. This dark- brown, nearly opaque liquid, pouring with a medium-heavy body and a tan head, is a fairly simple but well-executed example of what a porter should be. Its aroma is pitch-perfect, with notes of cocoa, espresso and toasted malt foreshadowing the rich flavor to come. This porter is an excellent transition to warmer weather, recalling its island heritage. It’s a smooth drinker for those who like a heavier feel, and has alcohol by volume of 5.7 percent.
