DENVER—Denver mayoral candidate Chris Romer has won the backing of someone who used to have the job.

Federico Pena endorsed Romer Tuesday. Pena previously supported James Mejia (meh-HEE’-ah), who was the third top vote-getter in the May 2 election.

Mejia has also endorsed Romer, who faces Denver Councilman Michael Hancock in the June 7 runoff election.

Pena was mayor of Denver from 1983 to 1991 and served in the Clinton administration as secretary of energy and transportation. He says Romer will carry forward the vision he had when he challenged Denver residents to imagine a great city.

Romer is a former state senator and son of former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer.
