RALEIGH, N.C. — Defensive end Forrest West, who was asked to leave the University of Colorado last month for not “buying into the program” despite leading the Buffaloes with 5 1/2 sacks in 2010, has transferred to North Carolina State.
West will sit out this season but will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2012. He had 19 tackles in 11 games as a sophomore, a year after he made 10 tackles in 12 games.
• Ohio State will not have to pay for Jim Tressel‘s legal team as the Buckeyes’ coach defends himself against NCAA charges that he knew his players received improper benefits but didn’t report it.
Tressel, in his 11th year at Ohio State where he makes around $3.5 million per season, has hired Gene Marsh to represent him before the NCAA’s committee on infractions Aug. 12 in Indianapolis.
• Four former Auburn football players have been indicted on felony robbery and burglary charges by a Lee County (Ala.) grand jury.
Michael McNeil, Antonio Goodwin, Shaun Kitchens and Dakota Mosley were indicted on five counts of first-degree robbery, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of misdemeanor third-degree theft of property. They are scheduled for arraignment May 26, with a tentative trial date of June 16.
Meanwhile, a grand jury has indicted the man accused of poisoning the oak trees at Auburn’s Toomer’s Corner, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship Jan. 10.
Harvey Updyke Jr., 62, faces two felony counts of first-degree criminal mischief, two felony counts for unlawful damage, vandalism or theft of property from a farm animal or crop facility and two misdemeanor counts of desecrating a venerated object, according to court documents. He is scheduled for arraignment May 26.
Sugar Ray Leonard reveals abuse
NEW YORK — Sugar Ray Leonard alleges in his upcoming autobiography that he was sexually abused as a teenager in the 1970s by an unidentified “prominent Olympic boxing coach,” a stunning claim by the former U.S. Olympic and world champion fighter who became one of the most popular fighters in the sport’s history.
Leonard’s book, “The Big Fight: My Life In and Out of the Ring,” depicts significant family trauma, including his parents’ domestic problems, his own cocaine and alcohol use and becoming a parent as a teenager.
Leonard is declining interviews until June, when he will begin a publicity tour for the book.
