PUEBLO, Colo.—An advisory committee is recommending the Pueblo school district close at least four schools to provide a high quality education in the face of a shrinking budget.
The Pueblo Chieftain reports the committee has been working with district officials to find ways to trim nearly $7.1 million from the 2011-12 budget. The committee has suggested closing at least two elementary schools and a middle school
Board members say the district’s enrollment has dropped over the years and buildings need to be consolidated to save money. They say the Pueblo school district had more than 26,000 students attending 41 schools in 1973. The current enrollment is a little more than 18,000 students and there are still 41 buildings.
School districts across Colorado are facing cutbacks as the state cuts education funding.
