BRIGHTON, Colo.—One of the casualties of the recent heavy rains in the Denver area is an animal sanctuary that’s home to about 400 creatures, including horses, dogs, cats, emus, chickens, sheep and ferrets.

Maxine Mager (MAY’-gur) says water flooding the property near Brighton has ruined buckets of feed, pallets, supplies and fences. She has run the Creative Acres sanctuary by herself for 24 years and tells KUSA-TV that this is some of the worst weather damage she has had to deal with.

Mager is hoping to use donations to repair her house and fences and replace feed and supplies. The free-roam, no-kill shelter was heavily damaged by a series of blizzards in 2007.
