PASO ROBLES, Calif. — Slovakian Peter Sagan swung wide right in the final 100 yards Thursday and sped from fifth place to win the 135.1-mile fifth stage of the Tour of California in 5 hours, 16 minutes, 3 seconds. Taylor Phinney of Boulder was eighth.

Chris Horner finished 11th and maintained his 1-minute, 15-second lead over fellow American Levi Leipheimer.

Thomas Danielson of Boulder-based Garmin-Cervelo is third overall, 1:22 behind Horner.

Contador maintains Giro lead

RAVENNA, Italy — Mark Cavendish won the 114-mile 12th leg of the Giro d’Italia — his second stage victory in three days — and Alberto Contador retained the overall lead, 59 seconds ahead of Kanstantsin Sivtsov.
