The Mississippi River reached its crest at Vicksburg, Miss., on Thursday without breaching its main levee or inundating the city.

The river crested at 14.1 feet above flood stage, moving at 13 mph, more than double its normal speed of 5 mph, the Army Corps of Engineers said.

The crest was the highest since records first were kept in 1827.
