DENVER—A Denver sheriff’s deputy accused of slapping a woman who was arrested has been charged with misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault and harassment.

The Denver district attorney’s office said Wednesday that 51-year-old deputy Anne Kelly is accused of slapping a woman arrested March 25 on a drunken driving charge. Lynn Kimbrough (KIM’-bro) tells The Denver Post that the woman had refused to cooperate with authorities at the jail.

The Denver Sheriff’s Department says it referred allegations of excessive force to the police department and placed Kelly on administrative duty. She is now on leave pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.

Kelly is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court June 24.
