A company seeking to build a new landfill in Douglas County has withdrawn its application but plans to re-submit it after seeking input from county commissioners.
Waste Connections wants to expand a 125-acre landfill mainly used for construction debris by another 100 acres to be used for all types of trash.
The landfill and a new recycling center, about a half-mile north of Sedalia and east of U.S. 85, would be adjacent to the Highlands Ranch Community Association’s 7,500-acre Backcountry Wilderness Area.
According to the HRCA, Waste Connections and others interested parties were barred from speaking with county elected officials because the initial application was under review.
Now that the application is withdrawn, the company can pitch it to the commissioners, modify the application and re-submit it.
“While it is certainly good news that the application is not moving forward at this time, we are under no illusions that this closes the issue,” said Gary Debus, spokesman for the Coalition to Preserve Douglas County. “We fully expect Waste Connections to continue to pursue plans to construct this unnecessary, destructive and dangerous project.”
Debus and some other nearby residents were concerned about odor coming from the landfill, and about views that could be blocked. There are also worries about potentially groundwater contamination.
