DENVER—Authorities say a commercial pilot and ground controllers in Colorado helped a passenger guide a small plane toward safety after her husband nearly lost consciousness at the controls.

KCNC-TV in Denver reports the 70-year-old pilot recovered in time to land the plane safely in Farmington, N.M.

The couple were flying from San Bernardino, Calif., to Colorado Springs on May 17.

The station says the pilot began having trouble breathing and speaking and was unable to fly the plane. Federal Aviation Administration ground controllers and the pilot of a Great Lakes Airlines plane in the air at the time contacted the passenger and helped her steer the plane.

The station didn’t identify the people involved. Specifics of the man’s medical problem weren’t available.

FAA officials didn’t immediately return a call Thursday.
