COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 19-year-old Colorado man on trial for first-degree murder says he was protecting his father when he shot a tire store employee seven times outside the store in Monument.

The attorney for Logan McClelland of Como said Thursday in the first day of testimony that the young man made a split-second decision to protect his father, who has high blood pressure. The Colorado Springs Gazette says defense attorney Jenny Cox argued that Big O Tires employee Bradley Blehm had been drinking and threatened to kill the defendant’s father, Tom McClelland.

The 50-year-old Blehm died from multiple gunshot wounds after a dispute outside the store north of Colorado Springs last August.

Prosecutors say confrontation didn’t escalate beyond an argument and McClelland didn’t have to shoot.
