JAMESTOWN, Colo.—Officials are urging the residents of a northern Colorado town to ramp up their bear-proofing efforts as the state’s black bears begin to emerge from hibernation.
The Daily Camera reported Friday that Jamestown, northwest of Boulder, has had at least six bear reports this year. No bears or people have been injured, but wildlife officials say they might have to euthanize an animal that gets too close to homes.
Wildlife officials say residents feeding local wildlife can often attract bears as well. They say bears are especially fond of birdseed, and once they’ve had their first taste it is difficult to get rid of them.
Officials warned residents not to leave trash out overnight and to contact the Colorado Division of Wildlife if they suspect a bear is hanging around.
