A 30 percent chance of rain could dampen holiday plans in Denver this weekend, and afternoon showers in the mountains may give way to overnight snow showers.

The weekend weather in Colorado may be a tad wet and a little colder than usual. But warmer weather is on the way, which could cause flooding in parts of the state in the coming week, the National Weather Service warns.

Memorial Day weekend weather began pleasantly, with mostly sunny skies in Denver on Friday.

Denver stands a chance for showers and thunderstorms today and Sunday. The temperature in the city should top out at about 67 degrees today and 68 degrees on Sunday, the Weather Service reports.

On Monday, Memorial Day, skies in Denver will be mostly sunny, and the high should hit 70 degrees.

In the mountains, campers should be ready for a slight chance of rain or snow showers through Sunday night.

Severe weather is not expected, but temperatures in the mountains will be below average, so campers should brace for the cold. Overnight lows at some higher elevations will dip into the 30s.

On Monday, a dry warming trend will start, and it will continue through the week, raising the chance of flooding, the Weather Service says.

By midweek, temperatures will be above average, including possible 80-degree readings in some lower mountain valleys. Meanwhile, overnight lows in the mountains will remain above freezing and the combination will kick-start a steady runoff of an unseasonably deep snowpack.

Rivers and creeks may start flooding low-lying areas the first few days of June, the Weather Service reports.

Heavy snowpack in the north and central mountains is already causing high creek and river flows in Grand, Summit and Jackson counties.
