NEW YORK — Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter has a brain tumor that is likely cancerous.

Doctors performed biopsies on a tumor in Carter’s brain Friday morning, and Duke Medicine said in a release preliminary results show it “appears to be malignant.”

“Once the pathology report is available, which will take several days, we will discuss treatment options with Mr. Carter and his family,” said doctors Allan H. Friedman and Henry S. Friedman.

Carter, 57, hit .262 with 324 homers and 1,225 RBIs in 19 seasons.

• Houston Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez is scheduled to undergo a precautionary MRI today because of discomfort in his left elbow.

• The Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Homer Bailey on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury and recalled pitcher Mike Leake from Triple-A Louisville.

McHale close to joining Rockets

HOUSTON — The Houston Rockets are close to hiring Kevin McHale as their coach. McHale, who would take over for Rick Adelman, spent 15 years with the Minnesota Timberwolves before he was let go in 2009. He recently served as a TV analyst.

Palmer, Garcia share Nelson lead

IRVING, Texas — Ryan Palmer and Sergio Garcia shared the second-round lead of the Byron Nelson Championship at 8-under-par 132 after firing 67 and 66, respectively.

Tim Petrovic (66) and Scott Piercy (69) were three strokes back, and Nick Watney (68), Joe Ogilvie (70) and Chad Collins (69) followed at 4-under.

Local amateur teenager Jordan Spieth (68—137) made the cut for the second year in a row but might miss his high school graduation ceremony about 20 miles away from TPC Four Seasons in the afternoon.

“I’m starting to wonder if he’s thinking about four years of college or just one year,” Palmer said.

• Amid speculation he’s facing a suspension from the PGA Tour over his behavior on the course in recent months, Rory Sabbatini withdrew from next week’s Memorial.

Alvaro Quiros birdied the final three holes for a 4-under 67 and a share of the second-round lead in the BMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England, with Luke Donald (72—136) and Italian teenager Matteo Manassero (70).

Kiyoshi Murota shot a 5-under 67 to take a four-stroke lead over Nick Price (70—137) and Hale Irwin (69) in the Senior PGA Championship in Louisville, Ky.
