DENVER—State-chartered entities will be restricted in how much they spend on travel for work under a new Colorado law.

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a bill Friday that limits travel expenditures to twice the maximum federal daily rate per diem for food and lodging. The law is a response to a pricey golfing trip last year by the public insurer Pinnacol Assurance.

The new law means state employees traveling for work could spend no more than $680 a night for lodging and food in New York, $554 in Boston and $300 in Colorado Springs.

Pinnacol spent more than $300,000 on the golfing trip. Pinnacol has said its incentive trips are modest compared to competitors.
