LONGMONT, Colo.—A Longmont man wants to gauge interest in carving a new St. Vrain County out of northeast Boulder and southwest Weld counties.

Wes Whiteley tells the Longmont Times-Call the new county would loosely follow the boundaries of the St. Vrain Valley School District.

The school district includes all or parts of Dacono, Erie, Firestone, Frederick, Hygiene, Longmont, Lyons and Niwot.

Whiteley says many people in the area feel existing county governments are out of synch with their goals.

A new county would require approval of local and statewide voters.

Whiteley says he’s part of a group called Citizens for St. Vrain County. He says the group will begin by asking governments of incorporated cities if they would support a new county.

He declined to identify other members of the group.
