A 22-month-old girl remained in critical condition Saturday, one day after she was hit by a commercial van in the parking lot of an Aurora apartment complex.

Shortly after 3 p.m., police responded to a call about an accident in the 900 block of Zeno Way, said Detective Bob Friel, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department.

An injured toddler was rushed to Children’s Hospital. She suffered life-threatening injuries, Friel said.

“The question at the heart of the investigation is how did this happen to this child,” Friel said. “What was a 22-month-old toddler doing wandering around a parking lot without supervision? Those are questions that we are looking into at this time.”

Detectives from the Crimes Against Children Unit and investigators from the traffic bureau are conducting a joint investigation.

The investigation will continue well into this week as authorities continue to conduct interviews and the traffic reconstruction is completed, Friel said.

Police have spoken with the girl’s mother, the driver of the van and other witnesses. No arrests have been made or charges filed.

“A parking lot is a dangerous place for a toddler,” Friel said. “Our investigation will be looking into who was responsible for keeping an eye on this child.”
