A 22-month-old girl is in critical condition after she was hit by a commercial van in the parking lot of an Aurora apartment complex on Friday.
Shortly after 3 p.m. police responded to a call about an accident at a complex in the 900 block of Zeno Way, said Detective Bob Friel, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department.
The toddler was immediately rushed to Children’s Hospital. She is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, Friel said.
“The question at the heart of the investigation is how did this happen to this child,” Friel said. “What was a 22-month-old toddler doing wandering around a parking lot without supervision? Those are questions that we are looking into at this time.”
Detectives from the Crimes Against Children Unit and investigators from the traffic bureau are conducting a joint investigation.
The investigation will continue well into next week as authorities continue to conduct interviews and the traffic reconstruction is completed, Friel said.
Police have spoken with the girl’s mother, the driver of the van and other witnesses. No arrests or charges have been made in connection with the accident.
“A parking lot is a dangerous place for a toddler,” Friel said. “Our investigation will looking into who was responsible for keeping an eye on this child.”
