A malting company in Alamosa is considering whether to carry millet malts all the time.
Colorado Malting Co. malted about 6,000 pounds of millet this spring for commercial brewers to experiment with as part of an initiative by state agriculture officials to build markets for the grain. Colorado is the nation’s top millet producer.
Colorado Malting Co. owner Jason Cody says his company will carry malted millet full time if there’s enough demand from companies and home brewers around the country. Cody says he’s just starting to get the word out and is gauging interest.
Millet doesn’t add the same flavor to beer as barley, but it’s gluten-free.
