An assault suspect fleeing on a bicycle was stopped cold Wednesday when a Lafayette police officer opened his car door in the man’s path.
The man is accused of assaulting a property manager at 610 Public Road in Lafayette. The property manager suffered minor injuries.
After the suspect headed west on a green townie bicycle, Lafayette Police Chief Rick Bashor said, officers in patrol cars caught up with the man on the 100 block of West Spaulding Street. An officer on bicycle patrol also pursued the suspect. The man refused to obey officers’ commands to stop and continued riding west. Police believe he was attempting to cross U.S. Highway 287 via the pedestrian overpass south of Emma Street.
Additional police vehicles intercepted the man near Spaulding Street and Bermont Avenue. As the man approached the vehicles — one blocking Spaulding Street and the other in a vacant lot near the sidewalk south of Spaulding — he tried to swerve around one of the patrol cars. The officer inside opened the driver’s door and jumped out, and the man rode his bicycle into the patrol car door and fell off the bike. Police took the man into custody without further incident.
