The road to the summit of Mount Evans opened for the season at 1 p.m. today, the Colorado Department of Transportation

The road usually opens before Memorial Day each year, but was delayed this year because of deep snow in the area.

The road opened on May 28 last year and closed on Sept. 7.

Mountain Evans Road, also known as Colorado Highway 5, is the highest continuously paved road in the United States and climbs to 14,264 feet, the summit of the closest Fourteener to the Denver metro area.

The cost to drive the 9.1 mile road to the top and back is $10 for vehicles carrying 10 people or fewer. Hikers, cyclists or those on motorcycles pay $3 per person.
