Firefighters are working to contain a small fire in the 3700 block of Lefthand Canyon Drive — near the area where the Lefthand Fire was sparked earlier this year.

According to police dispatchers, the fire was reported at about 1 p.m. at the base of a hill. The fire was moving uphill, according to a dispatcher, but appeared to be relatively small when first reported.

Rick Brough, a spokesman for the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, said the fire was about a quarter-acre large at 2 p.m.

“A person who was up there shooting reported it,” he said, referring to the popular pull-off area for target shooting along Lefthand Canyon Drive. “We don’t know how it started.”

Brough said winds in the area were gusting at up to 25 mph, which are far tamer than the 60 mph gusts that drove the Lefthand Fire, which burned 622 acres northwest of Boulder over several days in March.
