MONTE VISTA, Colo.—Boating and water skiing won’t be available on the San Luis State Park lake near Great Sand Dunes National Park this summer because of low snowpack in the Sangre De Cristo mountains.
Colorado wildlife officials say the Sangre de Cristos only received about 60 percent of the average snowfall last winter, and runoff from the stream feeding the lake will be far below normal.
Instead of letting water go into the lake, officials have decided to direct runoff to Head Lake and wetlands in the San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area to help wildlife.
But in northern Colorado, the U.S. Forest Service says high snowpack levels and recent moisture in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland may delay the availability of some activities like camping.
