Bark and branches may fall victim to chain saws and clippers, but it would appear screech-owls do not.

Tuesday evening, an arborist with Asplundh Tree Expert Co. was trimming away the canopy of an old tree on West Third Street when he discovered a nest of Western screech-owls in the tree.

Because the birds are among dozens of federally protected species, the saw had to power off.

Having encountered a similar situation the week before and many times throughout his career, the arborist called the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Raptor Program.
