Boulder County authorities are looking for information about an unidentified trio — two humans and one dog, linked to an accident in which a horse, startled by the barking dog, threw its rider near Nederland on Saturday.
Virginia Giles, 30, of Erie told the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office that she was riding along the trail in the West Magnolia area around 5 p.m. when an unleashed springer spaniel bounded toward her and jumped at the horse’s legs.
The horse responded by bucking and turning, Giles said, knocking her to the ground. Giles told police that two men on mountain bikes, one of them the dog’s owner, came along the trail a few minutes later. The men refused to wait with Giles until help arrived, Giles told police, and refused to give their names. While dogs need not be on a leash in that area, owners and handlers must have control of their dogs at all times. Anyone with information about the identity of the dog’s owner is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office.
