DENVER—Colorado’s construction industry is hurting.

The Denver Post reports the Colorado has lost about 60,000 construction jobs during the past three years, a reduction of more than a third.

Broomfield economist Gary Horvath says the industry employed nearly one in five private-sector workers in the state in 2007, but that’s down to about one in seven today.

Related industries are hurting too. The Denver Post reports there were about 2,000 mortgage brokers in Colorado in 2009, down from about 5,300 in 2003. The number fell amid the recession and increased regulatory scrutiny.

The Home Builders Association of Metro Denver says metro-area housing permits—now at a fifth of 2005 levels—probably won’t start to climb until 2012.
