NORTH PLATTE, Neb.—A shelter has opened in North Platte to assist residents displaced by the swollen North Platte River.
Mindy Mangus with the American Red Cross told KNOP-TV that the shelter opened Saturday at Adams Middle School. Sleeping areas have been set up in the gym and food will be served in the cafeteria.
The North Platte River is swollen because of steady spring rain and above-normal snowpack that have filled upstream reservoirs.
The National Guard will soon begin to repair a levee east of North Platte. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says 14 Guard members will put sandbags on the levee with help from a helicopter. A second helicopter is expected to arrive Tuesday from Colorado.
