More than 500 state employees have voluntarily dropped dependents from their insurance policies after an audit.

In April, the state began requiring employees to submit a marriage certificate, birth certificate or tax returns to prove that their spouses or children qualify for insurance coverage.

The Durango Herald said an audit found almost all 29,100 or so workers on the state insurance plan are playing by the rules.

However, Kathy Nesbitt, executive director of the Colorado Department of Personnel and Administration, said 519 people had voluntarily dropped dependents from their insurance policies as of Thursday, saving the state an estimated $1 million a year.
