The Rockies’ plans are written in pencil these days. Manager Jim Tracy wanted to ease Rex Brothers into the big leagues. But with the Rockies leading 1-0, the left-hander got the call in the seventh inning. His first pitch to Aaron Cunningham hit 96 mph. Brothers recorded two outs and gave up two singles, one a broken-bat slow roller. Matt Belisle got the final out, giving Brothers a scoreless debut witnessed in person by his dad and brother.
Start it up:
The Rockies’ starters the past two games allowed one run in 13 innings. Clayton Mortensen’s shutout work made a compelling case to keep him in the rotation despite Juan Nicasio’s solid outings.
String them along:
San Diego’s Chase Headley, a former prep star at Fountain Fort Carson, extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a second-inning single.
