Denver Parks and Recreation wants to change the way people pay for recreation, basing fees on the type of services residents use, rather than on their age.
But the department will have to wait at least another week until it learns whether the plan has even a chance of success.
This morning, the city council’s Land Use, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee heard a Parks and Rec’s proposal that would divide the city’s 28 recreation center into three categories based on size, hours and amenities.
Under the new plan, which would take effect Sept. 1 if passed, people using the smallest, or neighborhood, centers, such as La Alma Recreation Center in Lincoln Park, would pay $120 a year. People using mid-sized “local” centers would pay $240 a year and people attending the larger regional centers, such as the Central Park Recreation Center opened in Stapleton this year, would pay $360 annually.
All of the fees could be billed in monthly installments.
Residents currently pay based on their age group – youth, adult or senior citizen.
The committee asked for more information and then decided to wait at least one more week before deciding whether to move the proposal to the full council.
