A 34-year-old man, who police say appeared to be on drugs, died in Jefferson County on Tuesday morning after officers restrained him.

At 4 a.m. officers received a 911 call about a domestic disturbance at a home in the 8300 block of South Reed Street, according to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

After arriving, officers discovered a man who was “behaving in an erratic and disturbing manner” and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Police say the man refused to cooperate with deputies and became violent.

The man continued to fight even after deputies restrained him. Medical staff were called to assist the deputies.

After being loaded into an ambulance, the man stopped breathing. He was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital, where was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office asked the Lakewood Police Department and the Jefferson County district attorney’s office to assist in interviewing the deputies and medical staff.

The man’s name will be released pending an autopsy and the notification of his family. Jordan Steffen, The Denver Post
