Three Colorado Springs Utilities employees have been arrested in connection with the theft of equipment from a Utilities storage facility, Colorado Springs police reported Thursday.
Copper wire was missing from the facility, but the men have been linked only to stolen equipment, a Utilities spokesman said.
Robert Maestas, 33, Thomas Mattorano 39, and William Mohrenweiser, 41, were arrested on suspicion of felony theft and accessory to felony theft. They are being held in the El Paso County jail – Maestas and Mattorano on $3,000 bond each and Mohrenweiser on $2,000.
All three men are longtime Utilities workers who earned an average of $63,000 a year maintaining pipeline used in the city’s natural gas distribution system. Mohrenweiser was hired in 1994, Mattorano in 1996 and Maestas in 2001, according to Steve Berry, Colorado Springs Utilities spokesman.
