FORT CARSON, Colo.—A century after the first U.S. troops went to Vietnam, Fort Carson has thrown a welcome home party for veterans of the war.

About 500 veterans were greeted with a standing ovation Friday at the Army post outside of Colorado Springs. The Gazette reports the festivities included music, food and dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Gazebo.

Sgt. Bob Tallerdy tells the Gazette that he was attacked by war protesters when he arrived from Vietnam at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. He says Friday’s event was the welcome home he had been waiting for.
