With 4th of July approaching fast, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office want to make sure residents understand the laws regarding fireworks.

“A good rule of thumb: any device that explodes or leaves the ground is most likely illegal in Colorado,” a news release from the department states.

Illegal fireworks include, but are not limited to, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, M-80’s and Roman candles.

It is illegal to use, sell and possess any of the illegal fireworks in unincorporated Jefferson County.

Permissible fireworks include cylindrical or cone fountains, sparklers, toy smoke devices, snakes and glow worms.

Any fireworks — even those that may be permissible — are prohibited in Jefferson County Open Space Parks, Denver Mountain Parks and Forest Service lands.

The news release also warns residents that even permissible fireworks can be dangerous.

To report illegal fireworks, residents may call the Jefferson County fireworks hotline at 303-271-8025.

Illegal fireworks violations in unincorporated areas of the county will be most strictly enforced.

Selling, possessing and using fireworks illegally, is a class three misdemeanor. Violators could face a fine of up to $750.
