SOMERSET, Colo.—A New Mexico man injured in an accident at a western Colorado coal mine has died.

The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office says 53-year-old Fred Benally of Farmington, N.M., was injured Thursday at the West Elk Coal Mine in Somerset. Sheriff’s officials say the contract worker apparently fell from a catwalk platform.

The coroner’s office said Friday that Benally died Delta County Memorial Hospital.

The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
