Getting your player ready...

Why visit now: As the snow continues to melt, the rivers start to run higher and faster, and that can make for some unforgettable whitewater rafting. Around the state, there are more than 30 river stretches — offering experiences for beginners to veteran paddlers from Class I to Class V water — being run by commercial operations that provide quarter- to full-day and even multiday trips. Depending on the river, the season goes until October. Not up for waves? Fly-fishing is a mellow way to get on the water, with many of the outfitters offering all of the equipment and instruction, as well as experienced guides. Visit the Colorado River Outfitters Association website to find the right one. Kyle Wagner
