WESTCLIFFE, Colo.—Firefighters are battling a new fire in southern Colorado.
The blaze started Sunday afternoon in Custer County and has spread to 125 acres. High winds have prevented crews from using aircraft to fight the fire.
The Pueblo Chieftain reported that it forced the evacuation of about 100 middle schoolers from a church camp and residents who leave near Duckett Creek.
Crews are making progress containing three fires that broke out last week in southeastern Colorado, including two on Fort Carson’s Pinon Canyon Maneuver site.
Meanwhile, southbound Interstate 25 south of Trinidad has been closed because of a wildfire burning in New Mexico near Raton Pass.
More windy, dry weather is expected Monday in south-central and southeastern Colorado making it easy for fires to spread quickly.
