RATON, N.M.—A DC-10 jetliner converted into a firefighting plane is making passes over a wildfire burning near the New Mexico-Colorado line.
Officials at the Phoenix Interagency Fire Center say the plane had flown two missions over the 6,000-acre Track Fire near Raton, N.M., as of Monday afternoon.
The fire has forced the evacuation of about 800 to 1,000 people from neighborhoods northeast of Raton and shut down part of Interstate 25.
It has also destroyed two structures, but officials had no details on whether they were homes, businesses or outbuildings.
The DC-10 under contract to the state of California has been in Arizona since last week and made several drops of the 706-square-mile Wallow Fire. It can lay 100-yard-wide, mile-long lines of water or fire retardant.
