The Bureau of Land Management and Sunnyside Gold Corp. are exchanging property near Silverton.
BLM field office manager Matt Janowiak says the deal will allow the BLM and San Juan County to preserve some of the historic buildings at Animas Forks so the public can experience a bit of the area’s mining history and stunning scenery.
Under the agreement, Sunnyside will acquire 80 acres of BLM property and mineral rights about one mile north of Silverton. The BLM will get about 220 acres of isolated mining claims in the Animas Forks, Eureka Gulch and Midway areas. The land is heavily used by recreation seekers.
