AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.—The security detachment at the Air Force Academy is holding a memorial service for one working dog and a retirement ceremony for another.
The Friday service will honor the memory of Aghbar (AG’-bar), a German shepherd euthanized in May for medical reasons.
Aghbar was the first working dog assigned to the school, arriving in 2002. He was retired from active duty in March. He had also deployed overseas and had served on several Secret Service missions protecting dignitaries.
A Belgian malinois (MAL’-in-wah) named Odys (OH’-dis) is being retired from active duty on Friday for medical reasons. He’ll be adopted by a family in Monument, just north of the academy.
Odys is an explosives-detection dog and has been assigned to the academy since 2003.
The academy has seven active working dogs.
