Where: The harbor of Rovinj, Istria, with the old town and the Church of St. Euphemia in the background
Best meal: Puntalina, owned by the same people who run Monte, but this is much less expensive. Overlooking the sea and known for its fresh seafood.
Best deal: Casa Garzotto, a funky boutique hotel in the center of the old town, an artists haven. Friendly and helpful staff. Room includes breakfast and free bikes for an eye- popping and easy ride along the coast.
Best time to go: September: There are smaller crowds, and the Adriatic is still warm.
Best travel tip: No travel books mention this, but there is a daily ferry to Venice through Kompas Travel, for around $50 one-way. Tickets can be purchased in town.
