DENVER—Federal officials have signed off on an environmental review 20 years in the making that clears the way for Colorado state officials to explore major improvements along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor.

The Federal Highway Administration signed a decision Thursday on a comprehensive environmental review that will provide the framework for such projects as adding lanes from Floyd Hill west of Denver through the Twin Tunnels. Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman Bob Wilson says the first project will be a study of constructing a rail line along I-70.

State officials say specific projects will be developed as funding is available.
